Toy safety assessment
Toy safety assessment
Puuva's toys or products classified as toys, such as puzzles, meet the safety requirements set by EU legislation.
This safety assessment applies to Puuva products, which we classify as toys, and is based on the requirements of DIRECTIVE 2009/48/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL. The directive addresses the hazards posed by toys, such as chemical, physical, mechanical and electrical properties, as well as flammability, hygiene and radioactivity. The assessment must take into account the potential exposure of a child to these hazards.
Chemical evaluation: No hazardous chemicals are used in Puuva's toys. The toys are treated with toy paint or Osmo Top Oil, which is a paraffin-based natural oil. The surface treated with Osmo Top Oil is safe and pleasant to the touch after drying. It is highly resistant to common household chemicals and coloring agents, such as juice, cola drinks, coffee, tea, milk, beer and wine. Osmo Top Oil and the toy paints used by Puuva meet the requirements of EN 71.3 (Safety of Toys) and EN 1186 5/14.
Eri Keeper glue is used to glue the product parts together. The glue meets the requirements of EN 204 class D2. Due to the glue, the toy should not be put in the mouth, and it is recommended that toys be used with young children under adult supervision.
As the product contains details glued with wood glue, it is not suitable for use by children under 3 years of age. The glue is water resistant, but continuous wetting should be avoided.
Hazardous health effects:
Ingestion:
The veneers of birch plywood are glued, but the glue meets the criteria for food safety.
Corrosivity / Irritation :
The toys do not contain corrosive or irritating chemicals.
Breathing:
The glue, paint or oil used in the toys do not contain chemicals that would vaporize at body temperatures, so the risk of inhaling these substances is non-existent.
Skin and eye contact:
Not harmful in case of skin or eye contact.
Carcinogenicity:
The toys do not contain substances or chemicals that could cause cancer.
Sensitization:
Does not contain chemicals that cause sensitization or symptoms.
Physical assessment
Toys should always be used together with an adult. This is explained in the instructions that come with the toy. The toys do not break into small parts during normal use. The toys are large enough to not fit down a child's throat.
Toys manufactured by Puuva do not pose a risk of suffocation, strangulation or injury when used correctly. The only risk of injury is if the toy is thrown directly at another person, however, this is extremely unlikely due to the weight of the toy.
Mechanical assessment
The toy is made of birch plywood and does not contain any other parts.
Electrical properties
The toy is made of birch plywood and does not contain any electrical parts.
Flammability hazards
The toy is made of birch plywood. The toy cannot catch fire on its own, but is a flammable material. The toy should not be stored near fire.
Hygiene hazards
The toys are treated with Osmo top oil or toy paint. This allows the toys to be wiped and cleaned with a general purpose detergent.
Hazards associated with radioactivity
The toy is made of birch plywood and does not contain any other materials.
Preparation
The toys are manufactured in Finland by Puuva in their own premises in Hammaslahti, Joensuu. Only Finnish birch plywood is used in the toys. The birch plywood we use is PEFC certified and meets the requirements of the toy safety standard EN 71-3.
